2014/10/26 - Puma survives dastardly plot

(DP) - Jacksonville

Darrell 'Blind as a Bat' Gilman realized after two days of embarrassing failures that he was no match for the mighty Puma.  In desperation, Darrell hastily conceives a plan to try to win one last match before heading home with the stinging defeats seared in his memory forever.  He lures Puma and Simon "The Beast" to the beach cabana which he knows intimately from his many previous visitations .  He convinces Simon and Puma to go kayaking with him in the blazing hot Florida sun, in a jelly fish infested ocean with the hope of exhausting his competition (or worse) before the day's match.

Dastardly Darrell had forgotten that Puma had received an infusion of heavenly DeLeo lasagna the night before.  Little did he know that this nectar of the gods, had restored Puma to health (much like Popeye and spinach).  Darrell has also forgotten (perhaps old age?) that Puma had spent many years of childhood on the ocean and could speak the language of the waves.  Puma and Simon was thoroughly enjoying their kayaking experience and managed to masterfully guided their crafts to safety despite the many repeated attempts that Darrell made to collide and t-bone them.    In desperation, Darrell tries to convince Puma and Simon to land their kayaks in the rough surf near the rocky shore.  Darrell pointed out a landmark, a large piece of driftwood on the beach as the destination.  However, the two gallant warriors riding their seaworthy steeds guided themselves further up the shoreline towards a more suitable place.  Simon is first to attempt the shore landing and survives when he managed to leap off his kayak only moments before the unrelenting surf crashed down and tumbled it into the shore.

Darrell, with visions of victory in his head, focused on Puma.  As soon as he sees that Puma is moments away from his doom, he swiftly turns around and paddles furiously away from the crashing surf, back to the safety of the open ocean.  He turns back around to realize that his wicked plot had failed when both Simon and Puma stood on the beach, unscathed, wondering where he was. Knowing that he just couldn't float out there without attracting more attention, Darrell made his way back in only to be caught by the same evil plan he had lured the others into!  Sensing impending doom, he feebly attempted to jump from his craft and was immediately swallowed by the crashing waves.  In an ironic twist of fate, the karma of the ocean recognized Darrell's twisted plot and tore the glasses from his now terrified yet conflicted smirking face to deposit them into the dark abyss as tribute.

As Darrell stood on the shore, bruised, battered and somewhat blind without his glasses, he tried to analyze what had possibly find wrong with his plan.  Yes, he realizes in hind sight, that the sport strap he has in his car should have been worn.  He pondered and pondered, much like the Grinch, until his puzzler was sore, but he still could not think of something, he hadn't thought of before.  As the trio made their way from the beach in order to get ready for the day's disc golf match, Darrell continued to ponder about his failed attempt to remove the competition.  In yet another twist of fate, Darrell then learned that his car keys did not like salt water.

Once in dry clothes, but still shaken from the near death experience, the trio headed for the disc golf course where they met up with 2 local legends, Jason "Tinkerer" McCallister and Eric "Birdie" Taylor.  Birdie Taylor was well know to most of the group having won the season tournament several years ago (beating Darrell in the finals).  Birdie, however, claiming rust and an old shoulder injury started off very slowly.  Puma threw towards the old basket location yet again, while Jason, Simon and Darrell went for the fairway.  Even with easy throws, Eric just misses a par when his putt hit the chains and fell out.  Everyone ended up with bogies except Simon, who, as is his style, 3 putted.

Eric again took it easy, slowly warming up his shoulder, and watched everyone else have poor tee shots including Puma, who taco'd the first tree.  In an attempt to recover, Puma's second shot went a long distance but sadly, curved quite gracefully away from the basket.  Puma clawed his way back to finish with a double bogey. On #3, Simon had a great tee shot and a good approach to make par, while Puma made bogey and everyone chased their discs around the woods to make double.

Darrell led the way on #4 with a nice par.  On #5, Puma channeling his inner Bushman decided to avoid the trees on the left by going on a walk about back towards hole #4.  Puma made an outstanding recovery shot but sadly missed his putt and tied the others with a bogey.  Jason  still in lumberjack mode finally got past the trees but the damage had been done as he carded another double.

In the tightly wooded #6, Eric, still playing it easy, went with a roller which avoided most of the early trees.  Puma with visions of his great tee shot from 2 days prior still dancing in his head, promptly taco'd a tree.  Not to be outdone, Simon went into full lumberjack mode taco'ing trees on 3 consecutive throws.  His disc seems to have a slight wobble to it now.  Jason had 3 good throws to be the only one to make par.  On #7, Simon and Darrell went mano a mano with great drives to make pars.  Puma remembering to switch discs this time, still threw it into the trees and finished with a double bogey.

On the wide open #8, Simon and Darrell still continued their manly jousting with Puma joining the fray.  Eric, perhaps getting caught up in the heighten competition, finally deciding to return to the form we all know and admire, unleashed a huge throw easily beating everyone, but sadly it curved far enough left to leave an impossible second shot.  Trying to thread the needle, Eric hit some palm branches to leave a difficult 3rd shot which hit the basket but did not drop in.  Jason weaved back and forth across the fairway to make double bogey.

On #9, the first lake hole, Puma and Darrell, neither of whom learn lessons very well, repeated Friday's throws and deposited another 2 discs into the lake.  Darrell's second throw "to safety" went back towards #8, across the entire 8th fairway and stopped at the far edge of the trees.  He then proceeded to attempt a recovery (of his first recovery) by launching a huge throw across the entire eighth fairway, across the walking path and then over the lake where he made his second deposit with a resounding splash.

On #10, the second lake hole, Darrell deftly avoid the lake by attempting to go through the trees lining the embankment. Simon still in full chase mode, following closely on Darrell's heels, went for the same trees.  Eric reverting back to easy throws, went towards the soccer fields.  Puma went for the lake again but luckily his throw managed to fade back to the edge where it teetered for a moment, before deciding not to roll into the water.

Having survived the lake gauntlet, everyone relaxed and started throwing discs with abandon. Jason, Simon and Puma each made a par on #11 with Darrell and Eric making a bogey.  On #12, Eric shown his old form by uncorking an impressive throw (bring back memories of the real Birdie Taylor) to make his first birdie of the day.  Jason, Puma and Simon tried to follow suit but ended up with pars while Darrell missed his putt to settle for a bogey.  #13 was more of the same as Puma, Eric and Jason all made pars with Simon and Darrell making bogey.  Everyone made bogey on the long-ish #14.

Everyone had nice tee shots on #15, but Puma made his 40 foot birdie shot to the surprise of all (except Puma).  On the very long par 4 #16, Eric continued his dominance by make 2 long throws to set up his second birdie of the day.  Puma trying desperately to keep pace could not match the arm of Birdie Taylor and settled for a par.  Darrell in a somewhat vain attempt to stay close to Puma also managed a long putt for par.  Simon chasing Darrell settled for a double bogey while Jason still trying to master the new throwing style went wide right to the soccer fields.  Then he started remembering something in math about the shortest distance to a point is a curve and did some rough calculation in the sand and proceeded in a curve towards the basket.  A quick check of what Jason wrote revealed: sqrt((c-x)^2 + (d-a^(k^(bx)))^2).  Perhaps he needed a derivative as he finished with a double bogey.

It was at this point that Eric sadly announced that he was running late for another appointment and had to leave.  The group, wanted to see more excellence (from someone not nicknamed Puma), pleaded for him to stay.  Even Puma, understanding that his leaving would paved the way to an easy yet unfulfilling victory, begged him to stay, as a hollow victory does not excite him.  However as Eric walked off into the sunset, the remaining players trudged to the 17th tee box.  Although Puma and Darrell made pars on 17, a pall had decided on the group.  Simon whose arm was hurting by this point, struggled to just complete the match.  In the end, the results were mixed.  Eric would have won had he finished.  Puma finished with a 69.  Darrell and Jason at 73 and Simon with a 74.

2014/10/25 - Springfield and the dreaded Canal

As Rick "Bushie" Pike had expected, Puma was a bit tired after the hard partying from the night before.  His plan was falling into place.  Simon "the Beast" had run 3 miles at 7 am, and frankly, Darrell "Mr. Wiz" was not a morning person.  The 0900 start time was perfect.  Waiting blissfully ignorant at Springfield park, were Rusty Randy and his son Awesome Ethan.  Ethan sporting a large cast on his left hand while the bones healed from a recent football injury was making a noble effort to play.  Randy and Ethan had also decided to make the trip to meet with their beloved fantasy
football commissioner, Puma, as well as play some disc golf.  Rick's plan also involved a diversionary tactic aimed directly at this intrepid, unbiased, honest reporter.  Rick exhibiting a powerful influence on Becky "DOC" Pike convinced DOC not to play disc golf this fine morning
but instead drag the reporter's eyes and ears away on another "hot" story.  However, unbeknownst to Rick, the national press had gotten wind of this match and many eyes and ears were covering this match, including the MetLife blimp, Snoppy 2, which was over head to provide aerial coverage of
the event.

The first few holes went normally.  Puma, was beginning to return to form as Bushie put the third part of his plan, "Operation Canal" into effect.  On the 7th hole, as Puma was just about to launch his drive, Rick blurted out something about geese and the canal.  This outburst had the desired effect as Puma let go a wee bit early and watched as his beloved Undertow disc flew a long and graceful path along the left hand edge before fading into the canal.  Puma was as devastated as Rick was delighted.
Rick then worked the psychological aspect as he feigned concern and searched for the now   underwater disc, making sure to point out how dangerous the canal was and how far from shore the disc had landed.  Puma had no choice but to take a drop and start playing with his backup 2013 Ace Race Mantis disc.  Darrell also got tied up into Ricks' tactics when he threw his starting driver into the canal on the next hole as Rick no empathy but only glee with this turn of events.

After the first 9 holes, Rick's plan was working.  Rick was surprisingly, in the lead, 2 strokes ahead of Darrell and Puma with only 9 holes to play.  Simon still recovering from the early morning run, had some awesome drives on the front 9 but suffering from putting performance difficulties was
another 4 strokes back, followed by Randy and Ethan, who was learning how to throw a disc with a heavy counter weight on his opposite arm.  Even with a 2 stroke lead, Rick wasn't completely comfortable.  On the 10th hole (also along the canal), he inexplicably coughed during Puma tee shot which had the desired effect of yet another early throw and yet another disc casualty.  Darrell noticing the rising canal casualty counts tried to be careful but sadly also lost his second disc to the waterway.  Rick was overjoyed and started to relax. However, ever the competitors, the others
marched onward.  Simon started righting the ship when he threw a marvelous birdie on the tight, tree lined 12th hole.  This seemed to spark the competitive juices of most of the others. Rick, however, started getting nervous and began to falter under the onslaught.  Puma, Simon and Darrell started racking up pars at a furious pace as Rick went on several walkabouts and tree inspection tours.

Rick fought to stay ahead of the surging pack and had to make some remarkable recovery shots to settle for bogies.  After the 15th holes, things were all tied up with Rick, Puma and Darrell in the lead and Simon charging up on the outside.  Randy tried to stay with the surging pack as Ethan struggling to learn a new throwing style fell off the grueling pace.

Puma sensing the surge launched a beautiful drive on #16 as did Darrell.  Rick trying desperately to keep pace released his disc a tad late and went for yet another walkabout.  Darrell launched a wonderful second throw from 50 feet out and watched as his disc faded gracefully into the basket for his first birdie to stake his claim for the lead.  On #17, Puma, now having to pay attention to both Rick and Darrell while keeping a watchful eye on Simon launched yet another spectacular drive and
then made an spectacular 45 foot birdie putt for his first birdie of the day.  Rick suffering yet another bogey fell 2 shots behind.  Simon sadly missed yet another putt and fell another shot off the lead.  On the 18th, as was the original plan, DOC showed back up to watch what had been expected to be Rick's victory march.  Instead as Rick made yet another bogey, the match had come down to a thrilling finish with Puma and Darrell tied for the lead.  Both had impressive drives.  Darrell's second shot was actually closer to the basket but he missed his par putt wide right.  Puma trying to build on his momentum from the previous hole, sensed victory as his threw his 15 foot par put into the chains, only to watch in horror as it came out the other side.  Both players settled for drop in bogeys to
finished in a tie with a score of 63.  Rick was heartbroken that his dastardly plan had failed as he finished with a 66. Simon finished with 68, Randy at 69 and one armed, two disc Ethan with a commendable 77.

There is a rumor that yet another match (the 3rd in 3 days) is to take place tomorrow.  As usual, this unbiased, honest, caring, truthful, intrepid reporter with be on the course if it takes place.

2014/10/24 - Puma returns!

(DP) - Jacksonville

It was a bright, glorious day as Puma Pawson returned to Jacksonville
to continue his TWAC domination.  While Rich "Bushie" Pike cowarded in this
northeast corner of Florida afraid to go north to challenge the mighty
Puma, he blustered after the long days, far, far ago, when he could
actually compete with the newcomer, Puma.  The courteous, kind, and
always pleasant Puma understood the reasons behind his fear and make the
benevolent, friendly gesture of heading to Jacksonville for this amiable
match.  Also along for the match was Darrell "Puma's sidekick" Gilman
and Simon "the Beast" Bouma.  Rick, having learn the technique from Becky
"DOC" Pike, dawdled in an attempt to hopefully tire Puma out a bit before
the match.

During the warm-ups while waiting for Rick to finally arrive, Darrell
taco'd Pike's Pine on his first practice throw.  Meanwhile, Puma, ever so
gracious, was helping prefect Simon's throw in hopes of having someone
provide some meaningful competition. Luckily, Rick's tardiness provided
some much needed practice for Darrell and Simon.  Rick rode up on his
Vulcan bike and made his usual showy entrance.  Puma asked if Rick wanted
to warm up a bit.  Rick's reply was "oh, heck no, I'll beat you anyways!".

Rick, having played this course many times before and much more recently
than Puma, meticulously planned out which pine tree he wish to taco, but like
a poor marksmen, missed the target.  Darrell on the other hand, taco'd Pike's
pine yet again while Simon had a marvelous throw through the trees and down
most of the fairway.  Puma, not knowing that the basket location had been changed and
with no one kind enough to mention it, threw a graceful curve very close
to the old hole location before Rick chuckled, "Oh, they move the basket!  Didn't you
know that?".  Rick's dark side of the force black disk made a great recovery shot,
allowing him to bogey the first hole as Simon struggle with a 3 putt to tie Darrell and
Puma with a 5.  Rick was thrilled at his early lead.

Rick was sure his lead was golden so he promptly threw towards hole
#3 forgetting they were playing the second hole.  Darrell over torqued his
tee shot which only went as far as the first gully, while Simon and Puma
made magnificent tee shots.  Simon's second shot was a clear attempt to
remove the competition as he clearly aimed for Puma, who was standing way off to the
side.  Darrell's recovery shot was spot on allowing him allowing him to tie Puma
with a par as Rick made his second consecutive bogey with Simon 3 putting once
again for a 5.  On the 3rd hole, after watching Puma, Darrell and Bushie avoid the
trees with their tee shots, Simon taco's the tree closest to the center line.  He did manage
to avoid trees with his nice recovery shot only to taco the closest tree with his approach
shot.  Simon is not happy nor hungry with all of the tacos!   Rick made a reasonable approach shot only to 2 putt for his 3rd consecutive bogey.  Puma concerned about Simon gunning for him, overthrew the basket to tie Simon at 5 while Darrell made his move with his second par.

Puma deciding to stop this nonsense and start actually playing, unleashes a mighty throw down the fairway.  Darrell thinks that flight path may be a good approach as he follows that same line.  Simon excited about the 4th hole as there are no trees for the first 250 feet, unleashes a tee shot in the general vicinity of the basket but more left than the others.  Darrell and Puma's disc are within 2" of each other, and they argued about who had honors. Darrell arguing incorrectly that his tee shot went further astray and therefore was longest!  An honest and unbiased bystander was called upon to provide a ruling so that the game could continue.  The nice bystander rules that Puma indeed had the longest drive.  Rick purposely decides to go against the grain, zig-zags around the fairway, weaving drunkenly towards the basket in order to continue his bogey streak.  Darrell, staking his claim for the lead, making his 3rd consecutive par matched by Puma's par.  Rick and Simon followed with a bogey.

Darrell feeling buoyed by his success decides that the grass is too high and proceeds to "successfully" mow it.  Puma unloads a mammoth drive which, sadly, finds the woods before it can curve back. Rick "Bushman" Pike lives up to his moniker and starts his first walk-about of the day,
heading back towards beloved hole #4.  Meanwhile, Simon, the rational one, decides to just uncork a drive down the middle of the fairway during the chaos.  Puma, deep in the woods was in trouble.  However, he has practiced rollers due to his papillon's joy for chasing them, makes a nice
recovery and rolls out of the woods back to the fairway, only to watch it hit a tree root and roll back into the woods.  Simon, somehow still hungry, proceeded to taco the tree on his approach but still made a nice par saving putt.  Darrell and Puma bogeyed the hole while Rick rejoined the group with a double bogey. As they approached the woods, Darrell has the lead at +3, Puma at +5, Bushie at +6 and Simon at +7.

Puma having envisioned hole #6 during his exile up north and having been practicing the needed tee shot for this exact hole, proceeds to unleash his new found weapon of disc destruction with a tee shot to within 10 feet of the basket.  Darrell unnerved by this awesome display of prowess, tries to
just scare the trees out of the way but that didn't seem to work as his disc violently collided with a poor defenseless tree.  Rick and Simon proceed tree to tree towards the basket.  Puma makes his birdie putt while the others struggle to keep up.  Puma, confident about hole #7's flight path but forgetting that he usually used a different disk, threw his driver with rose majestically up towards to corner but never started the turn instead hitting a tree and ricocheting into the woods.  The others leap at this lapse in judgement and throw more reasonable tee shots.  Rick and Darrell proceed to make pars, Simon continues his aggressive putting style to reach double bogey while Puma hits a few trees coming out of the woods to settle for a bogey.

On hole #8, Puma throws a tremendous tee shot to within 15 feet of the basket setting up his second birdie of the day.  Darrell and Bushie watch in awe and settle for a par as Simon continues his streak of throw his first putt past the basket so he can make the come back putt for a bogey.   #9, the first
of two lake front holes, Puma feeling confident with his throws decides to throw across the lake for the first time in his life.  However, at the last moment his decides to not throw his beloved long distance Undertow driver and switches to the Dragon which, sadly, falls 3 feet short of the shoreline.  The Dragon floats on the lake mocking Puma for his decision.  Darrell deciding to show up Puma throws his Dragon slightly more towards the center of the lake and watches as the two dragon discs float gracefully on the surface.  Simon went more towards the shoreline and manages to find a flight path that allows the disk to at least remain somewhat dry.  Bushie wimps out entirely and decides to go around the lake. Darrell tries his second attempts across the lake which falls short but miraculously skips to the edge of the shoreline.  Puma's second shot was way off and fell into the palm trees.  Simon's second shot just misses the basket and he settles for a par.  Rick continues to play it safe and makes a par.  Puma and Darrell make bogey.  After 9 holes, due to Puma's 2 birdies, Darrell and Puma were tied at +5, Bushie was at +7 and Simon was +12,

On the 10th hole, Bushie continues his water phobia approach, playing it safe...very safe...
extremely safe, as he went closer to the soccer fields than the basket.  Puma went slightly over the lake but the shorter route did not prevent a bogey,  Darrell tried the lake route but decided to go via the trees and ended up with a disastrous triple bogey.  Simon went around the lake but still managed a bogey.

The fireworks started on the 11th hole, as Puma made the first of his 3 consecutive pars.  Darrell tried to keep up but could only manage 2 pars and a bogey.  Rick managed one par before deciding that bogeys were good enough.  Simon continued his overthrowing streak.  On the long #14, Rick and Puma made bogies, while Darrell and Simon made double bogies.  Rick kept his bogey streak alive on #15, while Simon and Darrell made pars.  Puma settled for a Rick aka Bogey.

On the 600 foot long #16, Puma, Simon and Rick both struggled to get anything going and settled for a bogey.  Darrell made a nice par.  Rick faltered on #17 with a double bogey while Darrell, Simon and Puma made bogey.  Everyone managed to make bogey on #18 to close out the day.  As the scores were tallied, Puma had returned to his rightful spot:
Puma - 66
Darrell - 68
Rick - 72
Simon - 75
