2006/07/12 - TWAC and Puma

> (DP) Jacksonville -
>
>    TWAC and Puma, a perfect match
>
>    Under beautiful sunny skies, the assembled crowds got what they
> wanted.  Even before the match began, the excitement in the air was
> palpable.  The steering committee may continue to change the rules after
> the fact to try and control this upstart newcomer, but Puma Pawson will
> be a force to be reckoned with in matches to come.  Things didn't look
> good at the start however.  Eric "Birdie" Taylor got off to his usual
> solid but slow start (all 4's).  Puma clearly feeling the pressure from
> his ever-growing gallery and missing the influence of Woody Gilman, got
> off to a rocky start, hitting trees while carding a 5, 6 and a 5 on the
> first 3 holes.  Richard "Clank" Keating provided some of the early
> fireworks with a 6-4-6-4-6-4 combination on the first six holes in
> showing Carla "Where is that going?" Keating that he wasn't going to let
> her win 2 in a row.  A new rookie player, Becky "The Other Way" Klein,
> thrilled the gallery with a rather usual but highly successful sideways
> putting technique.
>    Puma had the additional pressure of accepting Rick "Former TWAC
> Owner" Pike's challenge of making this also a TWAC match.  Going into
> the 4th hole, Rick had gotten off to a 6-5-5 start and was tied with
> Puma.  Rick continued to apply the pressure but Puma was able to use his
> enormous talents to pull off some amazing shots.  The shot of the day
> came of the 7th hole, a dog leg right in the heavy woods.  Puma stepped
> up and threw an amazing shot down the left side of the narrow fairway,
> curving to the right like a satellite guided cruise missile before
> coming back left at the end stopping within 6 feet of the hole. However,
> Puma, who didn't have much luck all night, found his disc resting near a
> tree and had a very difficult, almost unplayable uphill lie for the
> birdie attempt.  Puma using his mid-range disc, made a valiant effort
> but the disc hit the chains and bounced out and ended up with a par,
> leaving Birdie Taylor as the only recorded birdie holder in the league's
> history.
>    After the 9th hole, Birdie Taylor had a rather steady but
> unremarkable 33.  Rick "I want TWAC back" Pike (40) was only 1 shot
> behind Puma (39).  Puma and Birdie then decided to strut their stuff on
> the 10th hole by heaving their drivers into the lake.  Although Puma's
> driver sank like the Titanic, his hopes of victory did not. Having
> heaved his 2 drivers into the lake over the last 2 matches, Puma was
> forced to learn how to throw his mid-range Goblin from the tee box.
> Rumors were spreading throughout the assemble gallery that Birdie Taylor
> having an off night (for him), and carding 4 on every hole on the back 9
> was holding back trying to build up his handicap under the newly revised
> handicap system.  Puma and Rick battled down the back 9, until Rick
> wilted under the intense pressure and carding 5's on 10 and 14 and a 6
> on 16 effectively ending the challenge.
>    In the end, it was another dominant victory by Puma Pawson.
> Although the new handicap system scores won't be out until later
> today, Puma with a 74 should have another victory notch on his belt
> after Birdie shot a 69.  Rick Pike's 79 was a very good start for a
> rookie player and he has placed notice to the other golfers that there
> is another player to compete with.  Richard "Clank" Keating ended up
> with a 95 beating Carla by 10 strokes.  Even the rookie Becky who carded
> a 104 to beat Carla "Last Place" Keating by 1.  The next exciting match
> will take place on Thursday.
